Winter cycling

Keeping warm and dry in winter is the Holy Grail of cycle clothing. We’ve chosen the kit you need to keep going.

Between everyone in the office, we've ridden through a collective 100 winters, which is a lot of wind, rain, cold hands, wet feet, crashes, smashes and general misery. So between us, we think we've got it nailed. So we've put all our thoughts into a little guide, with some kit suggestions that should help you through your winters too.

Winter cycling clothing

Helmet – Lazer Sport Z1

This lid comes with an aero shell than can be clipped on to the outside to make it more aerodynamic. This has the added benefit of blocking the vents, which increases protection for your head during the colder months.

£200, madison.co.uk

Thermal cap – Castelli Viva Skully

Like a lot of winter gear, a skull cap isn’t going to win you any admiring glances. However, having an additional barrier between your head and the weather will make all the difference on a chilly day.

£19, saddleback.co.uk

Glasses – Rudy Project Firebolt

These photochromic lenses were originally created for cyclocross racers so they can handle the rain, shine, mud, sweat and a few tears. The lenses adjust to the changing light and the vents in the corner should prevent fogging once you really get motoring.

£98, yellow-limited.com

Neck warmer – Sportful Second Skin

Freezing wind can get into all sorts of crannies, which is why covering the space between your jacket and neck is vital. This neck warmer can even be used as a skull cap or a balaclava.

£21, c3products.com

Thermal jersey – Madison Road Race

Designed with input from the Madison-Genesis racing team, this jacket makes an effective mid-layer (over a merino base or under a light rain jacket). The snug fit and softshell material ensure you’re warm in all but the worst weather but still able to move freely.

£75, madison.co.uk

Rain jacket – Gore Power Active

This waterproof shell hits the double whammy of letting body moisture out while stopping rain getting in. It incorporates Gore-Tex Active for more breathability, and the cut lets you later underneath if it’s chilly.

£180, goreapparel.co.uk

Winter bike clothing

Gloves – Chapeau Winter

Chapeau has matched the material in each part of the glove to the elements that affect it. There’s a windproof and water-resistant outer, a neoprene cuff and a leather palm, which makes them dry, toasty and grippy.

£40, velobrands.co.uk

Tights – Madison Sportive Fjord DWR

If you’re heading out for a long ride in sub-zero temperatures, these all-in-ones will keep you warm. Made from thermal Roubaix lycra, they’re backed with micro fleece and a water-repellent coated fabric.

£75, madison.co.uk

WInter cycle shoes

Overshoes – Sealskins Halo

Overshoes protect your shoes and feet by keeping grit, dirt and water away from carbon soles and Boa fasteners. Not only will these keep your feet warm, the lights in the heel will increase your visibility too.

£40, sealskinz.com
