How to oil a chain

A well lubricated chain works smoother and protects components. Here's how to do it properly.

This is just so easy, there are almost no excuses not to do it properly.

  1. Clean the chain thoroughly. Adding lube to a dirty chain will just create a sticky mess, so use degreaser to loosen the grime, then wash with hot, soapy water and leave to dry.
  2. Drop the chain onto a small sprocket. This will force the chain through tight corners as it passes through the rear derailleur’s jockey wheels, forcing lube into the chain links.
  3. Apply lube to the top of the lower part of the chain and let gravity do its work. Backpedal the chain slowly while squeezing a drop of lube onto each link in turn.
  4. Once all links are covered, turn the pedals for a few rotations to get the lube thoroughly into all parts. Use a rag to remove any excess oil in order to prevent it attracting more dirt.

Now - get to it!
