Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep Floors) has won his second stage of the 2017 Giro d'Italia in a blistering bunch sprint on the streets of Messina after a perfectly timed late leadout from his team.
Jakub Mareczko (Wilier-Triestina) claimed second, while Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) took third.
The 157km stage got underway in Pedara, and it took barely a few hundred metres for the breakaway, consisting of just two riders, to form.
Maciej Paterski (CCC) and Evgeny Shalunov (Gazprom) were the two escapees, and with a bunch sprint all but guaranteed most teams were happy to let them ride up the road and pull out a lead - albeit one that never topped 4 minutes.
With a little less than 20km to go and as the race entered the finish town of Messina, the two were swallowed up by the bunch, which was led by Andre Greipel's Lotto-Soudal team, along with Caleb Ewan's Orica-Scott and that of local boy Vincenzo Nibali, Bahrain-Merida.
The route passed through the finish line with 7km to go before embarking on a final finishing circuit, but Bahrain-Merida's Luka Pibernik had failed to realise this, and after attacking within what he thought was the final kilometre, sat up with his arms aloft.
The bunch, racing along behind with 7km still to go, soon passed the unfortunate rider though, and the lead out trains soon got into place.
Lotto and Orica were the key contributors to the pace in the finale, with the bunch lined out in an indication of it's speed, but it was Quickstep Floors who outmaneuvered everyone and arrived late to bring Gaviria, led out by Max Richeze, to the front when he needed it.
Irishman Sam Bennett opened the sprint, and for a few moments it looked like he might hang on, but Gaviria was able to come around him in the final few metres, with a very fast Mareczko also pipping Bennett for second.
