Team Sky road captain and classics specialist Luke Rowe will be facing a significant period of time on the sidelines after breaking his leg on his brother's stag do.
After accidentally jumping in shallow water whilst whitewater rafting, Rowe landed awkwardly sustaining fractures to his right Tibia and Fibula. The Welshman has received surgery and is now recovering back in Cardiff.
As soon as as Rowe landed he knew this would be a significant injury, soon realising that this would certainly lead to a long time off the bike.
'I jumped down into the water but landed in a shallow section on my right leg. Being a bike rider you get in a lot of scrapes and you get used to injuries, but I knew straight away that it was a bad one,' he told the Team Sky website.
'It's been a big shock an I know I've got a long period of recovery ahead.'
Team Sky coach Rod Ellingworth also commented on the 'serious injury' and the support that will be needed to get Rowe back on the bike.
'An injury like this is a test of character for anyone, but character is something Luke has plenty of,' adding, 'He's a really important part of our team and, as a team, we'll be right behind him throughout his recovery.'
This injury will no doubt be a blow to both Team Sky and Team GB. Rowe played a vital part in Chris Froome's fourth Tour de France victory last month.
Rowe is also one of the peloton's most respected road captains and this loss will be felt for both his trade team and Team Gb's efforts at this year's World Championships in Norway.
