British Cycling has released a short statement confirming that it has accepted the resignation of Dr Richard Freeman, the doctor at the centre of the Bradley Wiggins mystery jiffy bag saga, citing concerns for his health.
Ill health has already been the reason given for Freeman not appearing in front of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee back in March, and he was due to speak to UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) two weeks ago.
The jiffy bag in question was delivered to Bradley Wiggins during the 2011 Criterium du Dauphine, a race he went on to win.
The doctor has stayed out of the public eye since UKAD began investigating the contents of the bag and the circumstances around its delivery.
He sent a written statement to the parliamentary committee in lieu of attending in person.
A lack of medical records and a laptop going missing on holiday means that Freeman's assertion that the package contained only the decongestant Fluimucil can not be backed up or verified.
Despite the statement from British Cycling only coming through on Friday 20th October, the Guardian reports that the doctor's employment ended on Monday 2nd October.
'Dr Richard Freeman has tendered and we have accepted his resignation from British Cycling in the interest of his health,' the statement reads.
'We regret that we have not been able to reconcile all unanswered questions whilst he was in our employment but we continue to work closely with UKAD as we are intent on bringing their investigation to a satisfactory conclusion.
'We hope that upon his return to health, Richard can do his part to help bring to a close ongoing investigations.'
