UCI to investigate claims made by former pro Phil Gaimon in regards to mechanical doping

The UCI is not ruling out the possibility of an investigation into claims made by former pro Phil Gaimon accusing fellow former pro Fabian Cancellara of mechanical doping.

Although the UCI was unable to confirm whether it is currently looking into the allegations made by Gaimon, it did confirm that an official investigation would be made if new information became available.

When contacted by Cyclist, the UCI commented, 'We can confirm that UCI President David Lappartient has said that we were not ruling out the possibility of investigating, especially if new information was made available.

'We have no further comment at this stage.'

In his new book Draft Animals, Gaimon comments on how performances during Cancellara's career aroused suspicion amongst his teammates with the conclusion that a motor could have been used.

'I dismissed it until I heard his former teammates talk about certain events where Cancellara had his own mechanic, his bike was kept separate from everyone else's,' Gaimon wrote in the book, adding, 'That fucker probably did have a motor.'

These allegations were then reaffirmed by Gaimon when contacted by Cyclist, commenting that he found it frustrating 'that people seem to have forgotten that in the latter part of his career'.

Twice Olympic gold medalist Cancellara has strenuously denied all allegations regarding mechanical doping and has described previous accusations as 'so stupid.'

Newly elected UCI president Lappartient has made it clear that he plans to crackdown on technological fraud in the sport, with the fight against mechanical doping being central to his tenure.

Criticism has subsequently been placed on Lappartient for his approach to motor doping, particularly by Jonathan Vaughters and Brian Holm who have repeatedly attacked Lappartient's ignorance to what they believe are the real issues faced by professional cycling.
