Riders at this year's Prudential RideLondon broke multiple fundraising records on their way to raising £12.85 million for charity. The extraordinary sum is now the European record for a cycling event, beating the previous total of £12 million jointly held by the event's 2015 and 2016 editions.
Beyond the grand total, Macmillan Cancer Support became the first charity to raise in excess of half a million pounds through the event, receiving just shy of £560,000.
This latest total has seen cyclists raise more than £53 million for charity in the first five years of the RideLondon event.
Since its inaugural event in 2013, the RideLondon sportive has grown from 16,000 riders to almost double with 29,692 eager cyclists completing the event in 2016.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan was quick to praise the achievements of the riders, heralding the cycling event that takes place through the nation's capital.
'I’d like to pay tribute to the efforts of every cyclist who helped to raise record-breaking amounts of money for good causes at Prudential RideLondon 2017,' said Khan.
'The event has become a major fixture in London’s calendar, raising millions of pounds for charity and inspiring thousands to take up cycling. It’s yet another great demonstration of how London is open.'
RideLondon has grown into one of the world's largest cycling events thanks to its multiple mass-participation rides and men's and women's professional races that take place across the same weekend.
In 2017, the men's professional road race was promoted to WorldTour status.
Ballot and charity entries are open for the 2018 RideLondon sportive which will take place on 29th July.
