A revolutionary multi-storey cycling hub is among the ideas being considered to rejuvenate the neglected Old Street roundabout in London.
The design has come from CoveBurgess architects and incorporates three innovative cylindrical hubs of different heights that will have space to accommodate 200 bikes each.
Alongside this futuristic bike storage will be a small pocket park which should help entrench a distinctively different look compared to the high rise buildings and car-heavy junction that it will be encased by.
This idea comes as part of a joint competition hosted by the Mayor of London, Transport for London and Hackney and Islington Councils to reinvigorate the area known as 'Tech City'. This cycling storage hub is one of three proposals.
The tubular designs have been designed to keep in style with the tech-heavy look of the roundabout and the wider design has also considered the current advertising hoardings that occupy the space by placing them on top of the tubes.
A partner of CoveBurges, Dan Covem commented on the design saying, 'This is an exciting concept which reactivates the public realm around this key highway junction.
'We have incorporated a practical solution to cycle storage, whilst incorporating an aesthetically dynamic vision for this busy junction.'
As an area with mass amounts of employment and business office space, a design that facilitates space for 600 cyclists would no doubt convince some commuters to turn towards two wheels while also giving current cyclists an easier form of storage.
This latest bid to help cyclists within London comes in the same week that plans were put into motion to partially close the gates of Regent's Park in line with Cycle Superhighway 11 from Swiss Cottage to Oxford Circus.
