Lizzie Deignan has announced that she is expecting her first child with fellow pro cyclist and husband Phil Deignan (Team Sky) later this year. Deignan confirmed that the child is due this September.
In a press release from her team Boels Dolmans, Deignan spoke of her excitement at the news.
'Philip and I are delighted to announce that we are expecting our first child in September. We both feel incredibly lucky and grateful that we are going to become parents. We are excited and full of anticipation for how our lives are going to change,' said an elated Deignan.
Due to the pregnancy, Deignan will be unable to defend her Commonwealth Games road race title on the Gold Coast, Australia in April. This will also see Deignan miss the Women's Tour, RideLondon Classique and La Course.
Despite the child being expected in late 2018, Deignan also announced that she aims to return to racing in 2019.
