Mark Cavendish, Geraint Thomas and Dani Rowe just a few of the top tier riders looking to win the national stripes

Geraint Thomas (Team Sky), Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) and Dani Rowe (WaowDeals) headline a strong lineup of riders heading to the British National Championships, which begin next Thursday in Northumberland.

Thomas is scheduled to race both the men's elite time trial and road race while Cavendish has been confirmed for the road race.

Welshman Thomas, who is aiming for a high General Classification finish at next month's Tour de France, will be joined by six Team Sky teammates, which should ensure a high standard of racing.

Among those joining Thomas will be former road race champion Ian Stannard and the in-form Tao Geoghegan-Hart.

Cavendish, meanwhile, will be joined by fellow Dimension Data rider and defending champion across both disciplines Steve Cummings. They will also have the support of first year professional Scott Davies.

Pete Kennaugh (Bora-Hansgrohe) has also been listed in the field for the men's road race and will look to put a troubling season behind him while Ben Swift (UAE-Team Emirates) will also take to the start line.

Alex Dowsett (Katusha-Alpecin) will compete in both events but will no doubt be focusing his efforts on securing what would be a sixth national time trial title.

Besides the threat of Thomas and Cummings, Dowsett will also be wary of world team pursuit champion Daniel Bigham (Team Ribble) and Harry Tanfield (Canyon-Eisberg).

The under-23 road race will also be of interest. Seldom do more than 10 riders in the category finish the race due to it being merged with the elite men's category.

Tom Pidcock (Team Wiggins), despite being just 18, will be many people's favourite although WorldTour pro James Shaw (Lotto-Soudal) and Charlie Tanfield (Canyon-Eisberg) should offer formidable competition.

In the men's under-23 time trial, all points towards a two-rider showdown between junior time trial World Champion Pidcock and individual pursuit Commonwealth champion Charlie Tanfield.

The women's road race will be headlined by Dani Rowe who will be looking to springboard from her recent third place at the Women's Tour to claim a national title

With no WaowDeals teammates, however, her work could be cut out against Hannah and Alice Barnes (Canyon-SRAM) and the Wiggle-High5 trio of Elinor Barker, Lucy Garner and Grace Garner.

Rowe will also target the time trial earlier in the week with multiple-Paralympic gold medalist Dame Sarah Storey (Storey Racing) and Hayley Simmonds (WNT-Rotor) sure to be hot on her heels.

The Championships will start with the time trial events from Thursday, with the road races set to take place on the weekend with reduced sprints predicted in both races due to the lack of testing hills towards the finish of the race.

Full start lists of all races can be found at the British Cycling website.
