Australian WorldTour team continues its GC focus with both Adam and Simon deciding to stay

Adam and Simon Yates have signed two-year contract extensions with Mitchelton-Scott to see them through until the end of 2020, the Australian team have announced.

In a press release issued earlier today, Mitchelton-Scott announced the British duo's decision to stay 'despite significant interest from other outfits'.

The Yates brothers both joined the team in 2014, and their signatures reinforce Mitchelton-Scott's drive to become one of the leading contenders for general classification honours at Grand Tours.

In May's Giro d'Italia, Simon Yates managed to hold the pink leader's jersey for 13 stages with three stage victories along the way, but faded from contention with just two days to go, finishing the race a lowly 21st overall.

Adam, meanwhile, is currently racing the Tour de France but has failed to find the kind of form that took him to 4th place overall at the Tour in 2016. Yates currently sits 30th on GC, 40 minutes adrift of race leader Geraint Thomas (Team Sky), after struggling in the Alpine stages.

However, team manager Matt White believes the Yates twins are the right options to deliver Grand Tour GC success longer-term.

'The decision was made with our owner Gerry Ryan back in 2013 that we wanted to evolve into a team that could ride for general classification,' said White. 'We then went about identifying young talent we believed in and developed them within our unique culture.

'It’s ongoing process, but we have certainly come a long way in a very short amount of time. In just ten Grand Tour attempts, we have already achieved two podiums and seven top-ten results,

'We are proud of what we have achieved so far and we have an unwavering belief in these two young men. With their returned faith, we know even bigger things are on the horizon,' White continued, adding, 'Along with Esteban Chaves, we have three of the most promising talents of this generation.'

Despite being on his rest day from the Tour, Adam also found time to comment on the deal stating that, 'It’s the best option, not just for me but for Simon.

'We’ve been with the team from the beginning, we’ve had great success and the team has supported us every step of the way so there’s no reason to change and we are both really happy to stay.'

While Adam is expected to continue fighting on at the Tour, potentially with stage victories in the upcoming Pyrenees in mind, Simon is expected to ride the Vuelta a Espana in August alongside Chaves in a battle for GC.

Both Yates brothers could also find themselves in consideration for the World Championships in late September. The course in Innsbruck, Austria, is one of the most mountainous ever designed and would certainly suit the climbing attributes of the two brothers.

As for Mitchelton-Scott, the securing of both Simon and Adam will allow them to breath a sigh of relief. Rumours circulated that Trek-Segafredo were attempting to buy Simon out of his contract however this is no longer the case.
