Colombian in visible pain after crashing in final 4km before teammate Richeze takes the stage

The sheer pain was clear to see on Fernando Gaviria's (Quick-Step Floors) face following his heavy crash in the finale of Stage 1 of the Tour of Turkey.

The Colombian was nestled in the middle of the bunch with 4km remaining, following his Quick-Step Floors leadout train.

However, the sprinter then had an opposing rider come across his front wheel, and with no time to react, he found himself on the deck.

Hitting the ground hard, television cameras quickly picked up the rider returning to his feet in visible pain, bent over clearly clutching at his right shoulder.

Immediately it appeared that Gaviria may have suffered a broken collarbone, although the 24-year-old did manage to remount his bike and roll over the line 4 minutes and 54 seconds after the peloton.

Gaviria will now head to the hospital to learn the full extent of the crash.

While Quick-Step Floors will be disappointed for Gaviria, who was a favourite for the day's stage into Konya, they will also be delighted for their Argentine ride Max Richeze who managed to win the stage anyway.

Taking the final corner better than the rest, Gaviria's usual leadout man took centre stage outsprinting Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Jempy Drucker (BMC Racing) to the victory.

This was victory number 70 of the season so far for Quick-Step Floors as the Belgian WorldTour team edge ever closer to the total of 84 wins in a season achieved by Team Columbia-HTC in 2009.
