Here's how to become one of 5,000 riders taking on the Worlds course before the pros

Celebrating the UCI World Championships in Yorkshire this September, 5,000 cyclists will be given the chance to ride part of the course just hours before the professionals hit the road for the relay team time-trial.

This one-off sportive will be centred around the host city of Harrogate, taking entrants through the scenic Yorkshire Dales, mirroring much of the course set to be tackled by both the men and women's road races, just days later.

The event will also then finish with the Harrogate circuit, giving amateurs the chance to ride the closing stages of the professional course.

The exact details of the route are yet to be announced although there will be three loops of 145km, 98km and 72km to choose from giving riders of all abilities a chance to emulate the rainbow-chasing pros.

Beyond riding the same roads, the sportive will also take place on Sunday 22nd September seeing it coincide with the inaugural team time-trial mixed relay, taking place later that afternoon in Harrogate, hopefully guaranteeing large crowds.

All riders that finish will be awarded a specially designed medal at the finish before having the opportunity to watch the professionals take to the course.

This will be the fourth time the UCI World Championships have visited the UK and the first time since its last visit in 1982. On that occasion, Italy's Guiseppe Saronni and Britain's Mandy Jones took the rainbow jerseys.

Due to the exclusive nature of the ride, interest for the event is expected to be vast meaning entries can only be gained through a ballot system. Details of how to enter can be found here.

Chief executive of Welcome To Yorkshire, Sir Gary Verity, has been one of the driving forces behind bringing the Worlds back to Britain and believes this sportive is all part of a once in a lifetime experience.

'The UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire this year will be one of those "where were you when" moments so to be one of the 5,000 amateur cyclists taking part in the official sportive, riding on the same roads as the professionals, in front of massive crowds will be will be an unforgettable experience!'

The UCI World Championships begin in Yorkshire on Sunday 22nd September with the sportive and mixed relay team time-trial before culminating on Sunday 29th September with the men's elite road race.
