The Team Sky manager posted his ride to Strava and proved he is no slouch despite being 55-years-old

Dave Brailsford may want to consider offering himself a pro contract for 2019 considering his Strava file after riding this weekend's Strade Bianche Gran Fondo.

The Team Sky boss was in town watching the likes of Diego Rosa and Geraint Thomas race on Saturday and decided to give the Tuscan white roads ago, himself, on Sunday.

Brailsford, who turns 56 later this month, completed the 139km sportive with 31km of gravel roads in just over four hours, giving him an astonishing average speed of 33.7kmh.

The speed would have been faster had it also not been for a puncture in the last 9km of riding.

His ability to hold this average speed is made impressive, firstly, because of the numerous steep sections of gravel road en-route and secondly due to the overall climbing elevation of 2,189m across the day.

Although Brailsford did not post his power, Strava estimated that the Team Sky boss would have averaged 280W for the Gran Fondo. While this should be taken with a pinch of salt, it does allude to the ability of Brailsford on a bike.

Putting his ability into perspective, Brailsford covered the Strava segment 'Strade Bianchi - Monteaperti', the gravel sector that is 1.7km at 2%, in 4 minutes 6 seconds, averaging 25kmh.

The day before, the chasing group of Greg Van Avermaet and Tiesj Benoot covered the same distance in 3 minutes 18 seconds, only 45 seconds then the 55-year-old Brailsford.

Brailsford also posted a photo on the start line of the Gran Fondo in full Team Sky kit joined by rider Gianni Moscon, who had raced to 58th the day before, and Fausto Pinarello, son of bike brand founder Giovanni.

Unfortunately, while both Moscon and Brailsford registered on the Gran Fondo's official website, neither crossed the official finish line to register a time with the organisers.

Riding mass-start sportives are nothing new to Brailsford, with the knight of the realm riding the accompanying sportives to Amstel Gold Race and Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 2018.

He also finished the Mallorca 312, a 312km sportive in Mallorca, as the 29th best finisher averaging 32kmh despite the 4,664m of vertical elevation.
