Pashley-made Santander bikes help break records for cycle hires in London

Since their release at the end of October, the new Pashley-made Santander cycles have been hired more than 25,000 times, setting a new record for hire rate.

The new bikes have been hired 30 per cent more than the average hire rate per bike per day, with 250 of the new bikes already available throughout London.

After a record-breaking 2016, that saw 10.3 million hires across the 12 months, Santander and Transport for London hoped to build on the growing success of the scheme.

So far this year, 9.4 million hires had been made with six of the first 10 months of the year beating year-on-year records for journeys made.

Last October just under one million hires were made, a record for the month since the scheme's introduction.

The new bikes, designed by British-bashed Pashley, have been manufactured with noticeably smaller wheels for improved handling and brighter Blaze lights for greater visibility.

These latest figures come days after TfL confirmed that the cycle hire scheme would be expanding into Brixton early next year with the east-west and north-west cycle superhighways also set for completion.

Head of cycle hire for the TfL David Eddington commented on how the upgraded Pashley-made bikes will help with the growth of the scheme.

'The new Santander Cycles have been exceptionally popular, with thousands of people trying the new bikes in the first few weeks,' said Eddington.

'We have no doubt that these upgraded cycles are going to help us break more records and will encourage even more people to take to two wheels.'
