The 2018 Tour de Yorkshire will see a record number of teams take part with 40 outfits confirmed across the men's and women's race this May. Both races will see 20 teams take to the start line in Yorkshire with some of the world's top sides confirmed to be taking part.
In the men's race the headline teams will be Team Sky and defending champions Dimension Data. They are joined by four fellow WorldTour squads in the shape of Astana, BMC Racing, Katusha-Alpecin and Team Sunweb.
Local fans will be glad to see room for Irish-registered yet Yorkshire-based Holdsworth Pro Cycling who get the call up in their first year of racing. They are also joined by five British-based Continental teams as well as the Team GB national side.
The notable omission in the men's race is that of Team Wiggins. The side had hoped to be invited to the race with star rider Tom Pidcock even expressing his want to be on the start line, however it seems as if organisers have decided on a different route.
The women's race has shown no difficulty in attracting the sport's biggest and brightest stars with seven of the 12 top ranked teams worldwide confirmed to be in attendance.
The highlights among them being Boels-Dolmans, Team Sunweb, Canyon-Sram and Wiggle-High5.
There was also plenty of space for local outfits with Storey Racing among eight British squad selected to race.
This will also be the first year in which there will be parity among the men's and women's race in terms of how many teams have been invited.
This was something Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Sir Gary Verity praised at the announcement earlier today.
'The demand from teams looking to compete in the Tour de Yorkshire is always high and that reflects the esteem in which our race is regarded,' said Verity.
'Reducing the number of riders per team from eight to seven in the men’s event meant we could invite more squads than ever before, and we also upped the number of women’s teams from 18 to 20 to ensure parity.'
